Expansion Opportunities - Metropolitan

NPHL Announces Metropolitan Branch Expansion Initiative

The Northern Premier Hockey League is formally opening discussions regarding expansion across its Metropolitan Branch.

As part of the League’s long-term growth strategy, the NPHL is seeking qualified ownership groups and organizations interested in bringing professional hockey to new metropolitan markets. This initiative is focused on sustainable operations, competitive integrity, and meaningful community presence.

Expansion Overview

The Metropolitan Branch represents a strategic phase in the NPHL’s continued development, offering opportunities for markets prepared to meet League standards both on and off the ice. Expansion will be selective and evaluated based on organizational readiness and long-term viability.

Metropolitan Branch Expansion Requirements

Organizations interested in expansion consideration must be prepared to submit the following:

Financial Capacity

Applicants must provide a detailed operating budget outlining projected expenses related to staffing, travel, league fees, insurance, arena costs, equipment, and game-day operations. The League may request confirmation of financial backing to ensure season-long stability.

Player Commitments

Applicants are required to submit a list of confirmed players committed to participate, supported by verified Elite Prospects (EP) profiles where applicable. Submissions should demonstrate the ability to field a competitive roster in compliance with NPHL standards.

Arena & Ice Availability

Applicants must submit an official letter on arena letterhead confirming guaranteed ice availability, including:

  • A minimum of 13 regular-season home game dates
  • Additional availability for playoff games as required
  • Designated game ice times meeting League facility standards

Verbal or tentative agreements will not be accepted.

Community & Market Support

Applicants must outline local community support and market engagement plans. This may include partnerships with local businesses, municipalities, sponsors, and community organizations, as well as strategies for fan engagement and outreach.

Team Branding & Identity

Applicants must submit a proposed team name, official logo, and preliminary home and away jersey designs. All branding is subject to League approval to ensure consistency and brand alignment across the NPHL.

Ownership Commitment

Applicants must provide a formal letter from ownership or the lead operating group detailing their commitment to operate within NPHL standards. This letter should outline ownership structure, governance responsibilities, and long-term intent to support the organization beyond a single season.

Additional details regarding expansion timelines, review processes, and formal application procedures will be announced in the coming months.
